Sagehill Stables appreciates all the amazing people who helped and sent offers of support yesterday.

We unfortunately had a fire at the stable in the early morning hours of January 8th. Thanks to the smart technology smoke alarms that we had installed, we were notified on 3 separate cell phones. This enabled us to respond more than 3 hours earlier than when our normal routine of morning chores would have begun and saved many horses lives...

The fire was contained to a separate building attached to the barns and the cause is believed to be a radio (electrical fire). Unfortunately, there was much smoke damage to the barn and it affected many horses. Casey and Gwen immediately called 911 and got all the horses out of the smoke that they could before Winnipeg Fire, Police and Paramedic services arrived to secure the scene and help clear the air. Dr. Dave Snell from Central Veterinary Service responded immediately and with the help of fire fighters began triaging the horses we were not able to move. Casey and Gwen then began the difficult task of finding, catching and sorting the horses outside. Once the fire fighters secured the safety of the building our staff, coaches and Elders Equine’s Dr. Chris Bell arrived and began to help us blanket and triage horses on a worst-case scenario basis.

Throughout the day vets and techs from Central Veterinary Service, Elders Equine and Elm Creek Equine worked together tirelessly in the cold to assess and treat horses and contact our clients. The Winnipeg Fire Department also continued to help us throughout the day supplying oxygen to the horses and we cannot thank them enough for this support which we believe saved many horses lives.

Despite our combined efforts, we are devastated to report that we lost 4 horses yesterday, including a Sagehill lesson horse, and a barn cat. Our hearts go out to our clients. There are several horses currently in critical care at Elder's Equine and Central Vet and we ask everyone to send their prayers and thoughts to these horses and their owners.

We want to say a special thank you to everyone who came out and supported us. In particular thank you to the Winnipeg Fire Department, Paramedics Service and Police Service for your quick initial response and continued support to the horses throughout the day. Thank you to Central Veterinary Service for your quick response and tireless care of horses and their owners. Thanks to Elders Equine Veterinary Service for coordinating the triage of horses and for your expert consultation, and to Elm Creek Equine Veterinary Service for assisting in triaging horses outside throughout the day. A special thanks to our coaches and staff who exemplified great leadership and courage. Thank you to all the clients, neighbors, friends, and family who came to help. Thank you to Kenny’s Water for coming in with tankers of water in-case we needed it. We are truly grateful for the community support.

There is a good deal of clean up ahead and we have a few sleepless nights still to come to care for the horses affected. We appreciate everyone’s continued offer of support during this difficult time and we will assess the next steps and what help we need in the coming days.
