Sagehill is offering new streams for our Equestrian Development Program starting this fall. While still continuing with how we have run the EDP program in the past, there is now the option to focus your training on a specific aspect of the equestrian world if you so desire!
First Division Streams:
Available once riders have completed the Intro Program. This division of streams is for Post-Intro to Novice Level Riders (see rider levels below). While riders have the opportunity to choose upon completion of the Intro Program, the opportunity to transition between disciplines is available each session. Discuss with your coach or the office for more information!
There are both Recreational and Competitive aspects of every stream, and once again, it is easy to switch between!
1. Western Stream: Within the Western stream in first division students will learn the basics of equitation and western riding in order to advance to more specific disciplines in second divisions, such as Barrels; Reining; Trail; Penning/Cutting; Speed Games; lessons can be tailored within the lessons to suit the interests of the student. Goals for novice level riders to advance are to develop core muscles required for loping, speed, and developing independent tack-up and horse care skills
2. English Stream: Within the English stream, there are focuses on equitation and advancing skills required for dressage and hunter/jumper streams in order to advance to second division. Goals for novice level riders to advance are to develop core muscles required for cantering, jumping, and developing independent tack-up and horse care skills.
3. Groundwork Stream: While we recommend starting your horse riding adventure with our Intro Program, the groundwork stream can be started at any point, even without participating in the Intro Program. Various smaller programs are offered within the groundwork stream such as Healing Beyond Words and Through the Eye of the Horse. However, that is not where this stream ends, as there is a never ending progression of learning to work with our equine partners without riding! This stream is well tied in with our Learn to Train clinics, as well as can be a customized program to include both groundwork and riding lessons (English or Western) if taken as private lessons. For students wanting to learn how to train, getting lessons in groundwork is a good first step.
4. Recreational Riding (can be done English or western): for students that aren't focused on advancing to second division and just want to focus on having fun, building relationships with horses, trail riding and non-competitive games. Goals may be to own a horse, lease a horse, or just enjoy horses and horse back riding for the exercise, barn atmosphere and connection with horses in a non-competitive atmosphere. (Note: there is a continued recreational stream for intermediate and advanced level students as well)

Second Division
Once at an Intermediate Skill Level students can choose from:
English Streams:
1. Hunter/Jumper
2 Dressage and Equitation
3. Eventing and all round English riding
4. Working Equitation (dressage and obstacles)
Western Streams:
4. Barrels and speed games
5. Reining, Western Riding Patterns and Western Dressage
6. Cowboy challenge (obstacles)
8. Horse training (can be English or western)
This stream focuses on introducing students to equine behavior and how to positively influence horses to teach them new skills both on the ground and under saddle. This stream works with young horses, rescue horses as well as more experienced horses that need to develop more advanced skills or introduce new skills in an area they are unfamiliar with. Just like us, horses are always learning new things! This stream will be focused this fall on two of Sagehill’s new arrivals, Hazel, and our rescue, Teddy! Students do need to be at a level to comfortable handle horses on the ground to join the training stream, but all students can participate in learn to train clinics and theory classes even at the novice and post-intro levels
9. Recreational (English or western): riders may have advanced their skills to an intermediate level but want to continue a recreational approach with a focus on fun, learning, trail riding, non-competitive sport, leasing and horse ownership skills. Can be done English or Western
Stay tuned to watch for updates about a polo stream! Inquire with the office or your coach for more information on the details of these streams!
Within both English and Western streams, both competitive and recreational paths are offered.
Once a stream is picked, riders do not feel like they are stuck there or can’t swap! The Sagehill report card system along with your coach will help guide where you will have the best fit if you decide to swap disciplines or streams at any point!
