The Sagehill Team

Sagehill Stables is owned by Gwendolyn (Gwen) Donohoe, PhD. Gwen has a PhD in sustainable agriculture from the Departments of Animal and Soil Science at the University of Manitoba. She first obtained her undergraduate degree in Agriculture in 2005 from the University of Saskatchewan and her M.Sc. in Soil Science at the University of Manitoba in 2011. Her dissertation studied the agronomic, economic, environmental impacts of bale grazing pregnant beef cattle overwinter and included the first measurements of methane emissions and individual animal intakes of forage in an extensive winter grazing environment.

Gwen has an extensive farming back ground, actively assisting in the operations of a large family owned beef cow-calf operation, previously a dairy operation, in The Pas, MB.  Gwen enjoyed growing up in the north and in 2005  started her first privately owned business called Nels Creek Land and Cattle Company, a cow-calf beef operation located in The Pas, MB, Canada.  While running her farm and completing her Master's degree, Gwen sat on the board of directors of the Prairie Improvement Network (formally the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council) as both a youth director and a director from 2009 until 2014, as well as was vice-chair and a director on the board of directors for the Kelsey Conservation District and Manitoba Conservation Districts Association. Gwen now teaches diploma beef production at the University of Manitoba and sits as the Breeds and Industry Chair for the Manitoba Horse Council.  Gwen brings extensive skills in livestock management, farm management and agricultural business administration.

Gwen has been in love with horses since the age of 8, when her parents bought her her first horse, Ace.  As a youth and teenager, Gwen spent all of her spare time riding and training horses, waking in the early hours to ride before school or farm work began.  Gwen learned to ride through the 4-H program, and was lucky enough to have an active club that traveled to shows and rodeos and brought in clinicians including the likes of Gordon Dalshaug of Willow Ridge Stables in Saskatoon. Gwen's inherited passion for entrepreneurship and farming have gotten the better of her, and she is very excited to be taking on the challenge of opening Sagehill Stables for the benefit of the equestrian community in Manitoba.

Casey Oldershaw is the caretaker of the beautiful facility at 4180 Waverley. He is a skilled carpenter and home renovator. His previous experiences include signage consultant/design, as a sales and production manager of Fast Signs in Winnipeg for over 5 years. Casey is also a skilled framer by trade and has assisted in the design and building of multiple houses where he managed crews of carpenters and labourers.  He also worked in the service industry for over 10 years as a bar tender and server which also involved training staff and management duties.

Casey brings to the team the skills and connections needed to manage and care for the property and buildings, as well as, the skills to handle personal management needs to run the programs offered at the facility and coordinate the independent businesses that will be working out of the facility.  He has a great deal of experience in client relations and customer service and is comfortable in hard/awkward situations by finding solutions.

Casey is an animal enthusiast and has recently become the owner of his first horse Rocky, a 1 year old colt he rescued last winter.  Casey is learning the ropes of the equine industry together with Rocky, and is excited about the opportunity to turn the facility into a successful and positive force in the Manitoba equine community.
